Assistant Radiation Safety Officer
Michigan State University operates FRIB as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. As one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities, FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. FRIB hosts what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, enabling scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry. MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report. Major Duties/Responsibilities:
This position will assist the RSO with the development, implementation, and oversight of MSUs FRIB NRC Type A Broad Scope license including: protecting people and the environment from radioactivity; ensure proper and safe working conditions for all; assess potential environmental impacts and ensure the that facility compiles with federal regulations; assist other professionals like engineers and scientists in designing facilities and new radiation-control programs; review and recommend radiation safety measures to the facility and equipment; provide guidelines and regulations on suitable radiation control programs; help in the selection, purchase, and maintenance of radiation protection, laboratory, and detection equipment; review emergency plans to minimize health physics problems; review all radiological monitoring data; assure safe use of radiation sources at all levels; recommend to management new methods and equipment for use in radiation work; develop training programs for future health physicists, creating a decommissioning funding plan, act as RSO during RSO absences.
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Physics, Health Physics, Environmental Health or a closely related Biological Science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in institutional radiation safety management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Degree in Health Physics, nuclear physics or closely related field; five to seven years of specialized experience with one or more of the following: research particle accelerators, commercial particle accelerators, radiochemistry, radiation safety officer experience, NRC license development, maintenance, and decommissioning.
